Leeds Social Enterprise Link e-Newsletter

Welcome to the Leeds Social Enterprise Link e-newsletter. This provides you with up to date, local and national news for people interested in the ever growing, changing world of social enterprise.

Social Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber Awards 2006

The winners of this years awards have now been chosen and will be announced at the Social Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber Awards Dinner later this year. So, if you haven't been contacted by a member of the Social Enterprise Link team by now, unfortunately you have not been successful this time but we hope you will enter again next year.

2007 GlaxoSMithKline Community Health IMAPCT Awards

The 2007 GlaxoSmithKline Community Health IMPACT Awards have been launched. The awards are run in association with the King's Fund.

These annual awards provide core funding for charities in the UK that are doing excellent work to improve people's health. Charities applying must be at least three years old and have income under £1 million. An overall winner will receive £30,000, nine other winners will receive £20,000, and up to ten highly commended organisations receive £5,000.

Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship

Applications are now being accepted for the 2007 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship, which support social entrepreneurs whose work has the potential for large-scale influence on critical challenges of our time: environmental sustainability, health, tolerance and human rights, institutional responsibility, social and economic equality, and peace and security. Initial letters of enquiry may be submitted until 18 September. Further details about the Awards areavailable at the link below. The Awards will be presented at the 2007 Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford University.

Funding

Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund

A second round of the Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund has been announced. Closing date for applications is 1st November 2006.

Organisations can apply for small grants (up to £5,000) or large grants

(between £5,000 and £30,000) which are available between April 2007 and

March 2008.

The fund will support faith and inter faith organisations to strengthen their capacity (capacity building) in order to play a fuller part in civil society/community cohesion.  It will also support inter faith activities which bring together people from different faith groups to talk, network and learn from one another.

Who can apply?

·        Faith based organisations

·        Inter faith organisations

·        Voluntary and Community organisations carrying out inter faith activities or working with faith communities

·        Partnerships between several faith or inter faith organisations in an area.

Hanson Environment Fund

The Hanson Environment Funds main grants and small grants scheme are to close to new applicants on Monday 16th October 2006.

Organisations are strongly encouraged to make their submissions as soon as possible to ensure the required funding is available.

The fund offers two levels of support:

Small grants scheme - grants between £250 and £5,000 for community amenities, and wildlife and habitat conservation. Applicants do not need to

be enrolled with ENTRUST.

Main grants scheme - grants between £5,001 and £25,000 for the creation and improvement of parks and public amenities and the creation, restoration and management of areas specifically to safeguard and/or enhance biodiversity.

Applicants must be enrolled with ENTRUST.

£81,000 available in 2006/07 for the Leeds Special Grants Programme

In previous years, the Special Grants Programme has supported research and development initiatives which identify and demonstrate ways to improve the delivery of health for specific groups or communities and ways to improve delivery of health and social care services. Following a review of the past 8 years of funding carried with the Scarman Trust, Leeds Voice and SGP Panel members, there have been changes made to the Special Grants Programme.

For 2006/07 it has been made clearer what is meant by research and development initiatives. A new strand of funding is also being introduced as part of the Special Grants Programme for practical city-wide healthy living projects.

The upper limit for research and development initiatives is now £10,000 although there will be scope for the Panel to award up to two grants at £15,000 for substantial research projects. Grants for healthy living projects will be for a maximum of £5000.

The deadline for applications for the Panel is September is Monday 11th September at 5pm.

Sustainable Futures Support Fund

Leeds City Council are pleased to announce...

Grants of up to £2000 are now available to provide support for community, voluntary and faith organisations operating within the Objective 2 Priority 3 areas of Leeds.  These grants are specifically aimed at bodies making the move from grant dependency to a more sustainable future.

The grant can be awarded towards the following ;-

I.T.upgrades and software

Networking costs

Relocation costs

Promotional and Marketing costs

Legal and Insurance costs


Through the Sustainable Futures Project organisations can also access high quality support in business planning, contracting, pricing structures, benchmarking, establishing policies and procedures, systems development, constitutional amendments and feasibility studies.

Supplying the Local Authority

Voluntary & Community Sector Procurement Workshop

Tuesday 12th September, 10am – 3pm

Wakefield Metropolitan District Council (WMDC) has teamed up with Social Enterprise Link (SEL) and Voluntary Action Wakefield and District (VAWD) to explain in plain English how to contract with the local authority.

Representatives will be attending from across council departments

Social Enterprise – Is it the right route for you?

A social enterprise is a business with social aims. All profits are reinvested back into the business or the community.  If you would like to explore the concept of social enterprise, find out how to set up a social enterprise and what support is available you need to book your place on our introductory workshop.

The workshop is aimed at community organisations and voluntary groups, as well as individuals looking to improve their community through business activities.

Tender Readiness Tool Kit

These sessions will be held monthly; the next session will be 22nd September, 10am-12.30 pm at the Social Enterprise Support Centre.

If you need an organisational health check before seeking contracts this is probably the most useful DVD you can get your hands on. View a demonstration of the toolkit and seek professional advice about your organisation’s capacity to deliver new contracts.

An organisational checklist shows how you identify full cost recovery, staff skills, equipment needs and policy requirements. Organise your project information to see at a glance what your capacity might be in the short, mid and long term.

A service development tool indicates the elements of a product or service you need to have developed to sell it successfully on a contract basis.

A staff skills checklist enables you to measure your staff’s capability to call on the skills needed to operate in a growing organisation with new contracts coming in and all that entails.

Full Cost Recovering (Budgeting)

The course is to help participants prepare budgets for different projects within an organisation and allocate a share of core cost to each project that needs to be covered by funding or other income. It is at introductory level and is for those who have responsibility for preparing budget and costing bids. The session will look at:

How to identify direct and core costs

How to prepare a budget

How to allocate core costs to projects to ensure all costs are recovered

How to use the budgets to identify shortfalls and see what would happen if funding only covers the directs costs and how to modify the budget to allow you to monitor spending during a year

Introduction to work life balance

With the ‘right to request flexible working’ under review, now is he good time to reflect on this and the other governments ‘family friendly’ legislation is affecting your organisation. The aim of the course is to explain what is meant by the term ‘work life balance’ and the common work practices that support it, look at the benefits to small voluntary sector organisations, answer some of your concerns and provide a step by step  process to develop ‘work life balance’. Mosaic Mentor Programme for Disabled People

Mosaic Mentoring is a new project, managed by the Fair Play Partnership and funded by Yorkshire Forward. Working across the Yorkshire and Humber region, the project aims to support disabled people who are looking for, or want to return to work - paid or voluntary.  Mosaic will provide trained mentors, who understand and are aware of the barriers and obstacles faced by disabled people or those who have had health problems,

to support mentees in returning to or moving into work.

Fair Play is looking for people to train as mentors.

If you are an employed/self employed disabled person or currently volunteering and have around 2 - 4 hours spare a month, and would like to help make a difference to someone else's life then you could train to become a mentor as part of this programme. As a mentor you will be provided with FREE training, resources and support to enable you to be a successful and confident mentor. Mentoring is an opportunity to use your

own personal experiences to help someone else realise and achieve their goals.

Fair Play is providing FREE training which covers areas like communication and listening skills; the training is held over 2 morning sessions, totaling 6 hours and is being held on the following dates: 

*          Scarborough - 31st August & 8th September 2006

*          Bradford - 7th & 14th September
