Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber is a not for private profit company established to represent, promote and drive forward the development of the social enterprise sector in Yorkshire and the Humber.
What SEYH believes:
Social enterprises have a significant role to play in improving local economies and delivering change within communities whilst supporting people into employment.
That the members of SEYH will provide the drive and leadership for the Social Enterprise community.
Social enterprises are wonderful but they are not a universal panacea that works in every community and meets every need.
There are plenty of enterprise advisors in the system and we need to build capacity within social enterprises rather than without.
Social Enterprises are members of the small business family facing many of the same challenges whilst attempting to respond to market opportunities as they arise.
Social Enterprises are wealth generators focussing on sustainable development and the redistribution of profit for delivering social aims including the employment of individuals more remote from the labour market.

FUNDING FOR BRADFORD REGENERATION SECURED UNTIL 2011
The success of the ground-breaking Bradford Kickstart programme, created by the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI), has been recognised by central government with a commitment to provide a further £15.8m funding to support the innovative scheme until 2011.
With registration to Bradford Kickstart increasing rapidly, and substantial funding available for small businesses, budding entrepreneurs and existing business owners are being advised to get in touch now to avoid disappointment later. There is limited capacity so preference will be given to those who enlist themselves early on.
The programme, administered by Bradford Council, has encouraged and assisted over 300 new businesses in its first 18 months – making it one of the most effective regeneration and enterprise initiatives in the UK. One of the reasons for this success has been the coordinated approach of over 50 public, private and community organisations from across the Bradford district are working together under the Kickstart banner. Each partner brings a specific skill, audience and area of expertise – helping to create a programme that is accessible to everyone, including those living in disadvantaged communities.
Kickstart not only offers comprehensive, practical support to fledgling businesses it also aims to develop entrepreneurial aspiration, ambition and ability in people who have never considered working for themselves. Backed by such funding, Kickstart can offer substantial tangible business assistance to all those wanting to go into business or operating a business.
Although considered to be a ten year programme, funding for the scheme was initially secured for a three year period from April 06 to March 09. Councillor Andrew Mallinson, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, was delighted by the announcement of additional support, “In only 18 months the effects of Bradford Kickstart are already being felt around the district. The scheme really has changed people’s lives. The new businesses that we have supported and encouraged have taken people off benefits, increased trade in the region, provided vital jobs, and created a real atmosphere of possibility and enthusiasm.
“Everyone involved in Kickstart has worked tirelessly to make it such a success – but there is still so much that can be achieved. This additional funding will allow us to offer comprehensive, long-term support to the region’s new and small businesses, and will really help to make Bradford a booming city of enterprise and opportunity in the years to come.”
The programme is targeted at all small businesses either already in existence or new start ups. People interested in learning more about Kickstart and how this programme can be of assistance to their businesses or business ideas should call 0800 9503 953, email info@bradfordkickstart.com, or visit www.bradfordkickstart.com.
